The fact that a song in Portuguese has more than 360 million of views on YouTube, transforming the singer into a worldwide superstar, is something out of the ordinary.
That, however, is what Brazilian Michel Telo -a former soccer player and waiter- is observing in his life since he is now a well-known artist whose danceable song Ai Se Eu Te Pego has been played a lot of times through radio stations, video channels, Internet, and night clubs since the last year around the whole world.
“I never imagined the success I would have with this song”, he admitted during an interview via phone.
This musician performs the sertanejo genre, which is a sort of Brazilian country.
“Ai Se Eu Te Pego” has peaked the charts in more than 40 countries where the Portuguese is not the native language. That has happened only a few times for Brazilian artists due to the language barrier and, apparently, Michel Telo never imagined he could reach this kind of success.
He is born in Parana and is 31 years old.
Telo released the song “Ai Se Eu Te Pego” (Ah When I Get My Hands On You) during mid-2011. The lyrics talks about the intention of seducing a girl in a night club. It was a single of his album Na Balada that is available in digital format (MP3) and in many countries is also available in physical format. Sales have been good enough, too.
Initially, the song was an instant success in Brazil but, according to Telo, it becomes a worldwide success only when Portuguese soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo -one of the current stars of Spanish Real Madrid team- danced a sexy choreography as a way to celebrate a goal score.
“When people saw Cristiano dancing while celebrating a goal against Malaga (another Spanish soccer team), everyone paid attention to my video. It was like a virus. Suddenly, soccer players from other Europe leagues started to dance the song, but also tennis players and NBA players. It’s a crazy thing”.
According to Telo, currently, some people think that this song is as important as Garota de Ipanema by Vinicius de Moraes and Antonio Carlos Jobim; and other people think that it is perfectly comparable to Macarena by Los Del Rio. Telo is very happy anyway.
“‘Ai Se Eu Te Pego’ is a very basic song, the lyrics is simple, the beat is very sticky. I think that is the secret to its success!”, said Telo who is also the singer for other songs such as Fugidinha and Pra Ser Perfeito.

We’ve Got Tonight – Phillip Phillips Lyrics
2 Jun 2012
Album: Phillip Phillips: Journey to the Finale
Genre: Pop rock, Soft rock
Lyrics by: Bob Seger
Release Date: 2012
Phillip Phillips is one of the two finalists of American Idol. He is a honest singer with very atypical attitudes compared with other contestants in this type of TV show.
Phillip Phillips was one of the 12,000 aspirants who want to participate in “American Idol”. He had his first audition in Savannah, Georgia. He sang Superstition by Stevie Wonder first and the judges ask him to perform a second song with his guitar. And there he won the pass ticket to the show: He performed a particular acoustical version of Thriller by Michael Jackson.
To stay as one of the two finalists he had to overcome several stages. He overcame the Hollywood session first, later the Las Vegas session. Lastly, he was chosen as one of the 24 semifinalists.
Sometimes his voice reminds us of Joe Cocker, sometimes he makes us remember the voice of Sting subtly but most of the time his voice sounds very similar to Dave Matthews‘s voice. Actually, Matthews joked himself about this singer in the New York Magazine, saying that maybe he can retire and Phillips could take charge of his band.
Phillips doesn’t have a big vocal power when compared, for example, with his rival Jessica Sanchez. His advantage is the fact that he is an original artist. Actually, he has showed some impudence when he said that he is not interested in trying to perform music to delight the public since the only reason why he creates music is because he loves it and he is not just trying selling music.
Since he can be considered as an indie artist, some experts anticipate a logic consequence: He won’t be a sales phenomenon.
“I’m trying to get the music out there. I’m not trying to be some boy that tries to look good or anything. I want the music to speak first,” said Phillips in a very self-confident way.
Phillips is very aware of the fact that the songs that peaks hot positions in charts are not necessarily high quality songs. But this doesn’t mean that he is against the commercial music, he just believes that he will try a different approach in his future career.
Actually, when he has had freedom to choose the songs to perform in “American Idol”, he opted for not very famous songs by not very prominent artists , for example: Volcano by Damien Rice. However, his best performance was when producer Jimmy Iovine picked a song for him: We’ve Got Tonight, the classic song by Bob Seger released in 1978 (an original song from the album Stranger in Town).
It’s weird that an artist such as Phillips was a finalist since his attitudes are not a traditional match with the conventions of these TV shows. When Tommy Hilfiger, the fashion designer, advised him against wearing gray clothes on the stage, he wore gray clothes. In that same episode, Jimmi Iovine (the mentor of the show and producer of artists like U2, Tom Petty, Stevie Nicks and Dire Straits, among others) advised him against appearing with his guitar on the stage, and again he did it his way: He appeared with his instrument.
