The fact that a song in Portuguese has more than 360 million of views on YouTube, transforming the singer into a worldwide superstar, is something out of the ordinary.
That, however, is what Brazilian Michel Telo -a former soccer player and waiter- is observing in his life since he is now a well-known artist whose danceable song Ai Se Eu Te Pego has been played a lot of times through radio stations, video channels, Internet, and night clubs since the last year around the whole world.
”I never imagined the success I would have with this song”, he admitted during an interview via phone.
This musician performs the sertanejo genre, which is a sort of Brazilian country.
“Ai Se Eu Te Pego” has peaked the charts in more than 40 countries where the Portuguese is not the native language. That has happened only a few times for Brazilian artists due to the language barrier and, apparently, Michel Telo never imagined he could reach this kind of success.
He is born in Parana and is 31 years old.
Telo released the song “Ai Se Eu Te Pego” (Ah When I Get My Hands On You) during mid-2011. The lyrics talks about the intention of seducing a girl in a night club. It was a single of his album Na Balada that is available in digital format (MP3) and in many countries is also available in physical format. Sales have been good enough, too.
Initially, the song was an instant success in Brazil but, according to Telo, it becomes a worldwide success only when Portuguese soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo -one of the current stars of Spanish Real Madrid team- danced a sexy choreography as a way to celebrate a goal score.
“When people saw Cristiano dancing while celebrating a goal against Malaga (another Spanish soccer team), everyone paid attention to my video. It was like a virus. Suddenly, soccer players from other Europe leagues started to dance the song, but also tennis players and NBA players. It’s a crazy thing”.
According to Telo, currently, some people think that this song is as important as Garota de Ipanema by Vinicius de Moraes and Antonio Carlos Jobim; and other people think that it is perfectly comparable to Macarena by Los Del Rio. Telo is very happy anyway.
“‘Ai Se Eu Te Pego’ is a very basic song, the lyrics is simple, the beat is very sticky. I think that is the secret to its success!”, said Telo who is also the singer for other songs such as Fugidinha and Pra Ser Perfeito.
